Heritage presents the 8th, 9th, 22nd and 24th symphonies in its ongoing series of archival recordings of Havergal Brian, under the baton of Myer Fredman. The audio has been taken from the original BBC master tapes which have been sensitively re-mastered. Fredman had a particular affinity with the music of Havergal Brian and these performances from the 1970s provide ample evidence. The recording of the ninth symphony is the only recording currently available in the catalogue. Erudite and informative notes are provided by Brian authority, John Pickard.
Symphony No. 8 in B-Flat Minor
Symphony No. 9 A Minor
Symphony No. 22 -Sinfonia Brevis
Symphony No. 24 in D Major

‘With this marvellous archival release, specifically that of the Ninth (1951), all 32 symphonies of Havergal Brian are once again available on CD at the same time………Fredman’s account is splendid………….these performances, all a half a century old or more, still sound extraordinarily vivid and convincing’ Guy Rickards, Gramophone June 2023

‘Fredman has an audible grasp of Brian’s often elusive thinking, so that these performances unfold with a formal inevitability and expressive focus often lacking elsewhere……… Heritage has done its customary fine job opening out the sound………Those familiar with these symphonies from the studio recordings will find Fredman’s interpretations an essential supplement.’ Richard Whitehouse Arcana.FM

‘……all in all this endlessly rewarding compilation is strongly recommended as either a Brian ‘starter’ or an essential part of any Brian collection.’ Kevin Mandry, British Music Society
