When Peter Jacobs embarked on these recordings of piano sonatas by Harold Truscott in September 1981, at St John’s Clerkenwell, they constituted the first commercial recordings ever made of Truscott’s music. In most cases, they remain the only performances the works have received. They appear here, for the first time, on CD.
Piano Sonatas 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 13, 15 & 17
Preludes and Fugues Nos. 1 & 2

‘Peter Jacobs plays throughout with the linear clarity and judicious phrasing needed. Guy Rickards astutely dovetails his observations with extracts from Truscott’s own commentaries. Well worth reissuing, and well worth acquiring.’ Gramophone February 2020

‘It is a distinct pleasure to welcome these pioneering recordings back to the catalogue. Made in the presence of the composer and partially released in the mid-1980s on LP by Altarus Records, and never reissued, they constitute the most compelling, distinguished and substantial entry to date in Truscott’s discography.’ Records International December 2019

‘Peter Jacobs is to be lauded for resurrecting Truscott’s long forgotten sonatas. Though almost forty years old, these are well-recorded performances. I must praise Guy Rickards’ detailed commentary on the works in the accompanying booklet. All I all, the piano sonatas have been for me a compelling first encounter.’ Stephen Greenbank MusicWeb International
